"How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.” - Isaiah 52:7
If we try to define peace through the world’s lens, we might arrive at a concept that seems to equate with passivity, but this passage tells us that God’s peace has agency. Peace is not synonymous with silence. Isaiah prophesies, “how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “your God reigns!”” (v.7). We are invited to publish God’s peace.
In many liturgical calendars, this week of advent is referred to as Preparation of Peace. As we light this candle we are preparing our hearts for the coming of Jesus. As creative beings, we are made agents of God’s peace. We have been formed in the image of the Father that shaped the universe in which we live. This is a beautiful calling He has extended to all of us!
One of my favorite children’s books, A Wrinkle in Time, captures this idea beautifully. As the children in the story are watching earth become shrouded by shifting cloud of darkness, advancing and retreating in turn, they ask their guides how to fight the spreading evil. This is where their eyes are opened: the battle has already been waged over generations; by musicians, authors, artists, dancers and other creative thinkers.
Isaiah invites us to join in this fight, bringing the good news of Jesus into our communities through the working of our artisanship. Spreading the beauty of God’s nature carries peace into the world. So, prepare your hearts to be carriers of peace. Keep pushing back the darkness.
